A hybrid role of applied physics and people leadership –  meet our Engineering Manager Ali Shah

Ali Shah Kyocera Technologies

Meet our team! Ali Shah works as an Engineering Manager, a role that blends technical depth with leadership. For Ali, the best part of the job is solving complex problems and continuous learning alongside a global team. What kinds of issues does he deal with in his work?

A hybrid role of technical depth and leadership

“Science meets experience and data – everything comes together as an engineered solution”. That is how Ali Shah describes his background and current role at Kyocera Technologies. His career path has taken him from hands on engineer to a leader of a multidisciplinary team focused on frequency optimization and stability. Having joined the company during a period of significant growth, he has successfully navigated the transition from a project manager to a strategic leader.

“We are strategically at Kyocera Technologies in a place where we are pushing the limits together to deliver the next generation of timing products. In practice, I spend most of my time working with quite detailed technical things. My role combines technical expertise with leadership.”

Ali has a PhD in micro and nano sciences from Aalto University. He says his studies have shaped the way he thinks and works: the combination of semiconductor materials processing knowhow and practical, experimental work gives him an understanding of how things are manufactured and produced in practice, rather than just in theory.

Driving innovation from concept to manufacturing

As an Engineering Manager, Ali’s work focuses on bridging the gap between ambitious research and practical, high-quality manufacturing. He plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the next generation of timing products is innovative, scalable and reliable for global markets.

“At a deeper level, we work on R&D proof of concepts with the aim of making them manufacturable and profitable for Kyocera. I oversee the development of these concepts and provide critical input on the choice of materials and their interfaces. Part of my work involves reviewing technical plans, challenging models, and helping the team see beyond prototypes to what is truly manufacturable. We navigate a very complex environment, collaborating across teams and continents.”

For Ali, the most rewarding aspect of his work is the moment a confusing technical problem becomes clear through experimentation and data analysis. He thrives on the unpredictability and daily new challenges that are inherent to the nature of R&D. Rather than being solely fixated on the final target, he finds fulfillment in the process of learning and navigating the resolution of complex issues.

He has enjoyed his time at Kyocera Technologies so far and praises it as a good place to work. The culture is defined by a balance of high-level professional standards and personal freedom. Ali emphasizes that for those with the right attitude the environment offers limitless opportunities to take ownership and evolve.

“Kyocera is a very flexible workplace. At the same time it is a serious R&D environment where you have to stay true to these values. The company highly appreciates a growth mindset and the right attitude. There is freedom to develop and take on responsibilities – nobody is going to hinder your growing process if you take ownership of things. It is a very people-driven culture where teamwork is essential; for individual contributors working in silos, it is not an ideal place.”

A tech-enthusiast in his free time

Outside of work Ali spends almost all of his free time with his family and small kids. He is also a passionate tech-enthusiast, so whenever he has time, he experiments with hardware, automation tools, and open-source software. This hobby has also helped him in his work.

“There is a very thin line between my work and my hobbies; I love understanding hardware , learning interface with software and improve them, whether it’s a tiny computer or a new software. I’ve also found it very useful in my work. Sometimes, it’s the things you enjoy that lead you to your career, for me sometimes it is layers of materials and other times it is layers of software.”
